Curling shingles are an obvious sign your roof is starting to age and a closer inspection may be required. Curling shingles result in significant granule loss due to the reduction in surface area on the face of the shingle. Once a shingle is curled, the sealant strip becomes compromised and may not seal to the shingle below, increasing the chance for the shingle to blow off in the next wind.
Granules are embedded on asphalt shingles to make them aesthetically pleasing, but the main reason they are there is to protect the asphalt from the sun and its UV light. Asphalt breaks down with exposure to UV light and over time this will result in small cracks and holes in your shingle, eventually leading to water penetration.
Chances are, that finding water dripping through a light fixture or down an interior wall could mean you have a roof leak. Sometimes this leak is caused by a damaged roof flashing, a couple of blown off shingles, or even the top of a vent may have blown off. If this was the case a simple repair may be all that is required. However, the roof may also be beyond repair and a roof replacement is required. A: The only difference between organic and fibreglass shingles is the mat that holds the shingle together. Organic shingles, which are no longer in production, have an organic mat that is basically thick paper made from recycled paper and cardboard. A: Organic shingles curl because of the paper mat holding the shingle together. Shingles are designed to shed water, they are not waterproof, and water can absorb into the paper mat over time. Once the paper mat gets wet and dry a number of times, the paper mat will shrink and change shape, resulting in the visible curling. The good news is fibreglass shingles will not curl because the fibreglass is inorganic and will not be affected by moisture.
A: Granule loss can be caused by a number of things including hail damage, curling shingles, defective shingles as well as the shingles just being old and the asphalt becoming brittle. When hail hits the shingles it can cause granules to dislodge from the asphalt. When shingles curl, the surface area of the shingle is reduced and granules are forced out of the asphalt. A lot of times with curling shingles you will see large chunks of granules missing. Defective shingles may result in premature granule loss. If this was the case, you may be eligible for a manufacturer warranty claim at the discretion of the manufacturer.
A: When shingles are being made, more granules than what are required are spread onto the face of the shingle to ensure full coverage. Often, some of these excess granules remain on the shingle and end up on your roof when the new shingles are being installed. It is these loose granules that are blown off or end up in your eavestrough after the first couple of rains.
